It’s important to start off a new semester right, and prepping your bag for success is a great start! Here are some essentials I always have in my bag so I can start my semester organized and in style: The Backpack: I just bought the cutest backpack made by JanSport from Target, and I am SO excited about it! I have wanted a cute backpack that was still functional for carrying all my tons of school supplies and laptop. I am super excited about my new backpack since it has the most comfortable shoulder pads made with cloud comfort technology and plenty of space in the laptop sleeve that is perfect for my ~15.6” Dell, and there are two more compartments for storing your smaller school supplies.
Water bottle: I have a great Contigo straw water bottle with a push button that opens the rubber straw top. I like this style of bottle since it will fit in the side compartment of my bag easily or clip onto my backpack with the carabiner feature. I also like that the top of the straw you drink from is covered up unless you flip it out which is great for a germaphobe like me. You can also lock the flipping feature to keep it closed! Pencil pouch: A cute pencil pouch is a staple for your bag since you will use it more than almost everything else. I got this cute one at the Dollar Store of all places! I also recommend checking out the makeup bag section when looking for a cute pencil pouch. Hand Sanitizer: Bath & Body Works has the greatest collection and array of hand sanitizers for your bag and life! They frequently have a deal where you can get 5 small sanitizers for only $6, and it is totally worth it because you will love them!! They also change their scents seasonally, so you’ll have to go back to restock when they do. Again, this is one of my favorite items since I’m a total germaphobe! Bobby pins & Hair ties: A couple of each will go a long way! I always seem to need them when I don’t have them. (Pro Tip: Store these together in an old Tic Tac or Altoid container so they don’t get lost in the abyss of your bad!) Headphones: A must have for in between classes and when you need some tunes to wake you up during your late-night library study sessions! Umbrella: Because when it finally does rain, you’ll want to be prepared! I also keep a plastic grocery bag wrapped around my umbrella in the very bottom of my bag for the days when it does rain. Chapstick: You never don’t need it! And Burt's Bees is the best! Notebooks: If you still like taking old fashioned hand-written notes like me! (PS studies have shown that students who hand write their notes retain information significantly better than students who type notes!) Contact case of medicine: Allergy medicine, TUMS, and Ibuprofen in a convenient container! Planner: Getting organized at the beginning of the semester is the best time to do so! I love sitting down with my planner when my syllabi come out and mapping out exactly when I’ll have all my exams, projects, and assignments due. This way, I’ll know way in advanced when I have a busy week and can plan study schedules accordingly. This will also help a lot for planning extracurricular activities and volunteering too! Mints: To hide that coffee breath! (Bonus: eating mint during the day has been shown to stimulate memory recall!) Snack bar: Perfect for when you don’t have time to grab lunch before a class or get stuck staying late in a class because your prof has to tell you all “one more thing.” It’s best to just keep one on hand because the last thing you’ll want to do is take notes and pay attention when your blood sugars are low! Phone charger: Because nothing drains a phone battery faster than trying to search for spotty Wifi on campus! Kleenex: Again, best to have on hand for those allergy-ridden days. Bandaids: One of those things you never seem to need until you don’t have one. Always good to have on hand for papercuts or blisters! Laptop & Charger: If you’re a laptop note taker this is an obvious must! But if you’re a handwritten notetaker like me, having your laptop on hand is a good plan too for starting that term paper while you have an hour between classes or to type up flashcards on Quizlet after lecture (I’d recommend! More on study strategy in another post!) Hope this helps you get organized before the semester begins because getting organized early makes your life so much easier!
